Txalaparta
About
“This is how we express what we’re feeling here in movement. This is how we beat the ground. This is how we take each other’s hands. This is how we paint with the arms in the air.”
—Jesús Rubio
Some pieces of wood, stone, or metal, and the energy of a few people is enough to play the txalaparta. But is the txalaparta only this specific way of organising elements, or is it a way of interacting with wood, playing, and being together?
‘Txalaparta’ is also the name given to the new creation arising from a collaboration between Kukai Dantza and Jesús Rubio Gamo. As the great maestro Juan Mari Beltrán says, “the txalaparta has no limits; we ourselves impose the limits”. In this case, the txalaparta has offered us a space for freedom where we can interact and share spaces in time and place, where we can build a new common universe, without giving up any of our individual identities.
Seven performers interpret this dance in the emotional space proposed by a dialogue between traditional dance and its contemporary envisioning. A rhythm born from the earth that beats in the present and rains down on bodies in the form of a voice constructed between memory and the future.
